When: Tuesday 17th June 2008, doors open 6:00pm, meeting starts 6:30pm
Where: UWE (University of the West of England), Frenchay, Bristol (see FAQ for directions and a map) - Room 2q50 (in Q block)
What: The ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions (MVC, Dynamic Data, AJAX History)
Who: Mike Ormond, Microsoft Developer Evangelist
Why: Because MVC is an alternative development model for .NET web applications that has testability built-in. Because Dynamic Data provides a credible framework for data driven applications. And because Mike Ormond is an excellent presenter who is well worth listening to. Mike will be the fourth Microsoft Developer Evangelist to grace our user group and given the three that went before him he has some living up to do.

Abstract:
ASP.NET 3.5 delivers a rich, scalable and highly productive web platform with innovations such as ASP.NET AJAX, LINQ and the new ListView control. Just over the horizon are the ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions which deliver new functionality to both ASP.NET 3.5 and ADO.NET. In this session we’ll use Visual Studio 2008 to explore the ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions including the new MVC (model view controller) framework, Dynamic Data and AJAX enhancements.
The MVC support in the ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions simplifies the implementation of the MVC pattern in ASP.NET allowing a clear separation of concerns and simplifying unit testing. Dynamic Data helps you to build a fully customisable, data-driven application quickly using an extensible scaffolding framework. The ASP.NET 3.5 Extensions take the ASP.NET AJAX model even further with such things as support for managing browser history (browser navigation) to alleviate the problem of AJAX applications behaving differently to ‘traditional’ web applications.
About Mike:
Mike gained a BSc(Hons) in Information Engineering from the University of Strathclyde before moving “down south” many years ago. After working as a civil servant for a while, Mike joined Mars Electronics where he worked on automated payment systems. In 1996 he joined Mercury Interactive before heading over to Microsoft in 1997 to work in their developer support organisation.
In 2003 he joined the Developer and Platform Group as a Developer Evangelist. Since then he’s travelled the length and breadth of the land talking about Microsoft’s platform and developer tools. Currently Mike’s interests include ASP.NET AJAX, Silverlight and developing solutions with Open XML. When he’s not working, Mike likes to potter in his allotment and listen to Radio 4 on the wireless.
