When: Monday 21st May 2007, doors open 6:00pm, meeting starts 6:30pm
Where: BAWA, Filton, Bristol (see FAQ for directions and a map) - Ground floor, room 7
What: Enterprise Library And The Policy Injection Application Block
Who: Alex Homer, Software Legend, author, speaker, MVP
Why: Because Alex isn't a Software Legend for nothing. This is a rare opportunity for us in Bristol because Alex lives absolutely no where near us so he is rarely down here. Also because Enterprise Library is and has been growing up and the PIAB is a hot (in fact, breaking-news) subject that has potential for all kinds of uses. (For some background information on the PIAB see http://blogs.msdn.com/tomholl/archive/2007/02/23/announcing-the-policy-injection-application-block.aspx).
How do I sign up for this meeting: Send an email to meetings at dotnetdevnet.com and quote your user name and the May meeting
Abstract: (Alex is giving two presentations this evening!)
1) Using Enterprise Library 2.0 in ASP.NET
In recent years, the Microsoft Patterns & Practices (p&p) group has been producing guidance and software that makes building enterprise applications easier. Recent releases include the Enterprise Library – a combination of the various application blocks released in the past under as a single installable solution that combines integration between the blocks with a comprehensive configuration system that makes it easy to add the blocks to your applications, and configure them. The blocks also now support a standard system of exposing functionality to users, and enabling the creation of custom providers. This session looks at what the Enterprise Library can do for you, some of the ways you can use it (including in Partial Trust mode), and an introduction to creating custom providers. It also provides a preview of the upcoming version 3.0.
2) ASP.NET and Object Policy Injection with Enterprise Library
Enterprise Library, from Microsoft's patterns & practices group, provides plenty of opportunities for simplifying and speeding up development of complex applications. One addition to the Library in the forthcoming version 3.0 is the ability to apply a series of handlers to the methods and properties of objects that your application uses, allowing you to add configurable policy-driven features such as validation, logging, exception handling, authorization, and caching. This session looks at what the new Policy Injection Application Block does - including how you can use it with the other blocks in Enterprise Library, and how you can create your own custom Matching Rules and Handlers.
About Alex:
Alex has had a love-hate relationship with computers that goes way back to the Sinclair Z80 and the Oric Atmos. In 1996, he retired from his full-time work to concentrate on writing and developing in the fast-growing arena of the Web. This coincided with the release of Microsoft ASP 1.0, and since then he has been involved in a range of Web development areas; plus data access, XML and other related .NET topics. His own company Stonebroom Ltd. (http://stonebroom.com/) provides consultancy and bespoke development services to the IT industry. Alex has written or contributed to over 40 books on Web technologies for J. Wiley & Sons/Wrox Press, APress!, Addison Wesley, and Sams Publishing - predominantly on Microsoft ASP and ASP.NET, ADO and ADO.NET, XML, and mobile device support. He has also contributed over 50 articles to ASPToday, DevX, 15Seconds.com and other ASP-related Web resources sites, and developed documentation of the Microsoft Patterns and Practices group. Alex regularly presents sessions on a range of Web and .NET technologies at conference in the US and in Europe. This includes the Wrox and ASPDevCon conferences; Microsoft's PDC, Tech-Ed, ASP.NET Connections and VS-Live conferences, and several other independent conferences. He has also conducted training sessions for various UK-based companies and developers on ASP.NET and XML. Alex is also a regular speaker at local .Net user groups, Microsoft local events and road shows, VBUG-UK and DDG-UK meetings. He is an MVP, and a member of the ASPInsiders Group and the CodeWise Community.
